colt single action army
The Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Single Action Army, SAA, Model P, Peacemaker and M1873, is a single-action hand gun with a revolving cylinder (a revolver) holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1872 by Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company—today’s Colt’s Manufacturing Company—and was adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892.
The Colt SAA has been offered in over 30 different calibers and various barrel lengths. Its overall appearance has remained consistent since 1873. Colt has cancelled its production twice, but brought it back due to popular demand. The revolver was popular with ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike, but as of the early 21st century, models are mostly bought by collectors and re-enactors. Its design has influenced the production of numerous other models from other companies.
The Colt SAA “Peacemaker” revolver is a famous piece of Americana. The original length of the barrel, issued to the U.S. Cavalry, was 7+1⁄2 inches (with an overall length of 13 inches).
Colt (Buy Colt Saa 357mag 5.5″-colts pistols for sale California) finally left the “loading gate concept” for a swing-out cylinder on its revolvers with the Colt M1889 Navy revolver, which resembled the Colt M1878 and was based on another design by Mason. The model was produced for three years between 1889 and 1892, and eclipsed by the Colt M1892 chambered in .38 Long Colt. The M1892 was replaced by the New Service Double Action revolver in 1899. In caliber .45 Colt, the New Service was accepted by the U.S. Military as the Model 1909 .45 revolver. The New Service revolver was available in other calibers such as .38 Special and, later in the 20th century, .45 ACP (as the M1917 revolver) and .357 Magnum.[46]Under a contract with the U.S. Army, Colt Arms built the Model 1895 ten-barrel variant of the Gatling Gun, capable of firing 800-900 .30 Army rounds per minute, and used with great effect at the Battle of San Juan Hill.[47] The M1895 Colt–Browning machine gun or “Potato Digger” was built by Colt. The Colt–Browning was one of the first gas-operated machine guns, originally invented by John Browning. It became the first automatic machine gun adopted by the United States and saw limited use by the U.S. Marine Corps at the invasion of Guantánamo Bay and by the 1st Volunteer Infantry in the Santiago campaign during the Spanish–American War. In 1901, Elizabeth Jarvis Colt sold the company to a group of outside investors based in New York and Boston.Read More

ANKITA –
I was raised on single action revolvers. It started out when I got a pair of cap guns resembling Peacemakers for my 6th Birthday. I cleaned up the neighborhood. I ridded the community of bandits, bank robbers, rustlers and other two-legged varmint. It sometimes got me in trouble, but I was fearless and well armed. Later on, I got my first real gun. It was a Ruger Single Six. A few years later, I afforded a pair of Colt SAA in .45 Colt, followed by a few more. I still have 3 of these.
These days, I don’t get to the range much. I had bought a few air guns, mostly the CO2 type. I can shoot these in the house using a good pellet trap which I have 3 of them. The other day, while ogling and cleaning my precious Peacemakers, it occurred to me that Umarex makes these in .177 cal pellet, CO2 powered. I did some research and turned around and ordered one. I was a little skeptical, but the price was not prohibitive.
On the day it came, I fell in love. This CO2 powered Colt SAA by far exceeded my expectations. I am amazed by its accuracy. On mine, the sights are right on. The ejection rod is functional but not really needed. In fact, when the gun is canted, muzzle up, the cartridges fall out by themselves. I dropped the first one on the floor, not expecting this. I got used to it.
On the real Colt, the base pin can be removed in order to take the cylinder out of the frame for cleaning. On the Umarex replica one needs tools to do so. But with this gun that is not really necessary, and I do not recommend you mess with this. Just leave the cylinder in its place. I also ordered more cartridges to supplement the 6 silver colored ones it came with. I bought 3 sets of the gold/brass colored ones. They function just like the silver ones, but they cost less. Now, these cartridges do not resemble the actual .45 Colt ammo. Instead, they look a lot like .357 Mags. This does not bother me. If I want to show off I stick the Umarex into one of my Western style holsters/belts the loops of which are filled with .45 Colt cartridges.
This revolver looks and feels like the real thing, and it weighs and balances the same. The grips are not like any I ever saw and laid my hands on, but they are very nice looking. I just pretend they are custom made which they are, in a sense. Cosmetically, this gun looks amazingly like the real thing. There is one visible deviation from the real article. On the grip frame, right where the hammer and the frame meet, there is some black in color polymer type insert. I guess this has to do with it being a CO2 powered replica. There is nothing one can do about this. I can live with it.
I tested it on my 8 meter range in my shop. I use RWS Meisterkugeln pellets, the only ones I ever use as they have always worked for me, for decades. My first group of 6 shots were right on target and I could cover the hole with a Nickel. I guess I was a little flakey from all the excitement about this new gun. The next day, I shot 3 more groups of six rounds all of them I could easily cover with a dime. Well, I have decades of experience with all kinds of air guns and fire arms including US Army MP Corps for nigh 8 years.
Overall, I am very very pleased with this version of a Peacemaker. I can only recommend to all who have knack for it. You won’t be sorry.
BELLA S –
I needed a realistic looking Colt for a film shoot. The fact that this shoots pellets is just gravy. It’s a great gun. Looks real, feels real. Accurate single action. I’d definitely purchase again! If you’re wondering about the leather holster, I got that off Amazon separately.
JOEL –
The pistol shoots incredibly accurately, even at the longest I can shoot at my house range (40 yards). The velocities are not very high, nor is the muzzle energy however I am sure that with a well placed shot it could easily take down sparrows and mice. I am able to get around 100 consistent shots out of the pistol, and after that the velocity drops to a point where you can’t hit much even at five yards. Up to this point I have fired around 3,500 to 4,000 shots through the pistol and today sadly the hammer spring snapped. I was planning on doing a much more detailed and in depth review including much more actual recorded information regarding shot count, velocity, accuracy and such. I am however now waiting to hear back from Umarex to see if they will give me replacements for the hammer spring. I will update my review when I hear back from them.
SHARON –
It’s indiscernible from the real thing with the exception of the discreet safety switch located just forward of the trigger-guard. It loads, cocks and fires as the original does and the ejector rod (although not needed) functions as well. Nicely balanced it’s easy to shoot off-hand with impressive accuracy.
REACHER –
If you are a shooting enthusiast, this is the gun for you. It is not a hunting gun, but a fun plinking gun that uses CO2 and pellets that are loaded into the individual bullets that are then loaded into the gun cylinder, just like a real gun. It is economical and a pure joy to shoot. The gun is solid metal and has the heft and feel of a real gun. It looks like a real gun almost in every way. I bought a leather double fast draw holster rig for it and spend way to much time in front of the mirror with it. I highly recommend this.
MARLEY –
very pleased with this Colt SAA. it has the look and feel of a real gun. I been shooting for over 40 years and this is perfect for shooting in my basement. once the weather gets warmer will take her in backyard for plinking.
its plenty accurate for plinking etc.
The fit and finish is very nice for the price. It did not like domed pellets as a few of them would get stuck at the end of the cartridge but all of the daisy match pellets ran through it flawlessly.
the only problem is that one of the cartridges came with the missing rubber grommet that holds the pellet so I am only having 5 shots.
will see if Umarex can send me an extra grommet or cartridge but other than that, its great.
OH, and I got over 100 shots on a C02.. the last 20 shots were noticeably less powerful but still good enough to hit the target within an inch of bulls eye..
ANGEL –
Hi folks. I’m fortunate enough to have the real thing chambered in .357 magnum and this replica is an absolute beauty and is very similar to the real deal. The .357 is so expensive to shoot, and I wanted to get something similar to practice in my own backyard without having to go to the range and spend $50 every time.
I’m happy to say that this Colt replica is so incredibly fun to shoot that I think I even enjoy shooting it more, as I don’t have to clean it when I’m done and 100 rounds only costs me $1.50!
It’s also super accurate and heavy like my original. Co2 lasts a long time. Absolutely AWESOME!!
DANIELLA –
This is an excellent piece of hardware. Wonderful craftsmanship. Almost the same weight as my Ruger Single Six in .357. Detail and finish is great. As realistic as you can get even though it is an air gun. The shape an feel is wonderful. Unfortunately, because of the way the gas discharge system works, the hammer cannot lay flat as with real revolver. When sliding your hand up the holster to grab the gun your thumb catches the end of the hammer instead of the thumb spur. Starts to get a little painful after awhile. This is the only reason why I return mine. Never even loaded or fired it! If that could be corrected it would be worth keeping.
HANNIFER –
Umarex got this one absolutely right! I own a pair of these pellet versions and even modified my first with a fanning hammer available from Umarex for quick draw competition. Coupled with an awesome western rig available on Amazon I have a ton of fun plinking in my yard and at competitions both. I bought a second one to hold onto as a collectors item. The weight action and feel are the genuine article!
BURNA –
This is a cleverly designed revolver, which seems to be reasonably accurate, when it works. Actually the first revolver was totally jammed out of the box and did not work. I received replacement immediately. I like the realistic handling and loading. The fact that the inner barrel is pushed into the recesses in the drum causes a pretty unsmooth action of the cocking mechanism. I do not like this. Also I think the revolver is slightly small. I have to admit, I never shot a real peacemaker, so I cannot compare. But I did shoot other .357 and .44 mag revolvers. I actually expected a replica of a .45 LC revolver to be more the size of a .44 mag revolver, but this replica is clearly the size of a .38 / .357 revolver, as are the cartridges. Other than that, nice replica so far.
BRAANT –
Was not disappointed. I have an 1873 Colt 45 Peacemaker but don’t get out to the range very often anymore. No problems now. This air pistol has the look and feel of the real firearm. And, it is powerful. The pellets will penetrate heavy metal baked-bean cans filled with water. I’m old and disabled, but this pellet pistol brings back the youth in me. So far, after more than 50 rounds, it is still dead on the bullseye at 10 meters and the CO2 cartridge is still going strong. Definitely an inexpensive and realistic way to practice for Cowboy competition. I’m going to make a Paladin holster for this beauty. I only wish I had gotten one in blue instead of nickel for the complete Paladin effect.
DIEGO –
Had to get new air valve from Europe. It wore out at 6-7000 pellets. No on has replacement parts in U.S. including Umarex. Slow shooter..under 400 fps
Air valve gasket/ O ring hard to find and expensive as well [England] . Springs are impossible to find.
Side plate does not sit flush with frame at rear. Hand spring [pawl] is not secured i.e no holes or pins to wrap spring around. i.e Easiest way to replace the hand spring is to fully cock while side plate is off the gun. Springs could fly off if not careful. Hammer sits in what would be second click on a real gun. I can live with that, tho.
Great fun until you need a part. I would recommend this pellet gun so long as you do not wear out or need parts.
BEVERLY –
This is a great piece of history and a awesome pellet revolver.
I received it a couple days ago and I’m having a hard time putting it down. Fun to shoot and spot on. It has the weight similar to my .38 but way less expensive to shoot. I really like the loading gate and loading the bullets gives it a real feel.
I’ve been knocking down cans like crazy. I’ve been using beaman pointed pellets about 5.4 gr. They’ve been sailing.
I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this got a lot of great reviews and now I understand why. Its a great gun.
If you’re thinking of getting a replica gun or just want cool revolver…. this one is for you.
PEARL –
I own five other umarex guns and this is my favorite pistol. The only problem I have with it is the first 40 rounds will all go 3 inches high due to the fresh cartridge. I just aim 3 inches low to account for it. After the heavy pressure from the new cartridge comes off it will shoot straight as a string at 30 feet. This problem however is not uncommon with co2 guns.Buy lots of extra bullets, much time spent reloading.
KANYE –
This is absolutely amazing, upon opening the box I was instantly even more excited. I’ve always wanted to own a replica or close to this classic lawful peacemaker. It fires exceptionally well given you use the pellets that it can fire, I’ve tried 144. BBs and they fire well just not as accurate. I recommend ONLY using the pellets for this version though you can do both.
PITTMAN –
Just like the real thing (except firepower). The revolver action is fantastic, even half-cocking the hammer allows you to rotate the cylinder to load/unload using the loading gate. The “bullets” can be pre-loaded with pellets to play cowboy loading, or you can quickly insert pellets directly into them from the loading gate for a faster reload.
It’s metal (seems like a stainless alloy), heavy, and very realistic. Even the barrel is extended slightly to give the impression of a .44 or .45 caliber end.
ZLATAN –
I had said how much I loved this shiny pellet shooter! I love revolvers and this one is a DOLL!
First off if you want the look and feel of the real thing OHHH YEAH! This baby has it! Balance and accuracy are GREAT right out of the box! Using the bullets to load the pellets is a blast and I have a full rig buscadero belt with shell loops I made for it. We set up targets and eggs and at the normal 7yds it is great! Further you get a bit of pellet drop.
Second id the looks OHHH it is a beauty. Finish and fit of it is impeccable! The only thing I will say is learn to know when the gas is low… stuck pellets are a MESS and very hard to clear!
Over all it is a real treat to shoot!
RANDEL –
I was pleasantly surprised at the weight and detail. I originally thought it too pricey but it was a requested birthday gift. I now believe you can’t beat the price for the quality.
ODILION –
The action/sounds are very satisfying and the look can’t be beat. The realistic action and reload will make anyone feel like a cowboy. Didn’t really plan on shooting this but curiosity got the best of me. Performed great shot every time with the exception of some operator error. Make sure to push the pellet down until flush with the gasket in the shell casing otherwise the cylinder will get hung up and not revolve.
ALEXA –
the only thing I don’t like about the Colt SAA 45 .177 Pellet Nickel Air Pistol is that the hammer does not come to rest against the frame of the gun. The quality of the parts and the way it is put together is outstanding. Putting pellets downrange is right on the target center! I have a DW 357 mag revolver that can’t come close to the quality of the Colt. Wish I could trade the DW in and buy another Colt pistol! Can’t go wrong buying one of these Colts.
KHALIFA –
First of all, I love everything about this gun — the look, weight, balance, feel, trigger, everything. The only problem was that when I first used it with regular domed pellets it wasn’t very accurate. It shot high and to the left with groups of 2-3″ at 6 yards. I was about to return it when I read somewhere that the gun was much more accurate with heavier pellets, specifically the Crosman Premier 10.5gr. What a difference! It now shoots exactly to the point of aim with groups of less than 1″ from a rest. I’m very happy with it.
AUDRIE –
I expected to be a little disappointed in this but it meets the praise of the other reviewers. It is a surprising copy of a Peacemaker. About the same weight and feel. Note that the hammer doesn’t come to full rest and no firing pin on the hammer, which is the only visible difference. Yes, you can spin it though there is a lot of room in the trigger guard. Great toy
DAVID –
Lots of fun to be had in this airgun. The size and finish are very nice. The front sight blade is pretty small, as they were on old revolvers, but if you practice with it it’s pretty accurate. Well within minute-of-tin-can, at least. I’ve used a variety of lead pellets in it and had no trouble with any of them. The single-action mechanism is very satisfying, and it gives you the Colt “four clicks,” provided you accept that the hammer rests at “click two” normally with this airgun due to how the gas release mechanism works. The loading gate and ejector rod are lots of fun, though if you don’t feel like fussing as much you can just open the gate and tip the gun backwards, and the shells will come out without needing the ejector rod.
DURGAN –
Absolutely beautiful gun. Shoots well and accurately up to 20 yards (maybe further, haven’t tried). Only complaint is that the hammer doesn’t rest all the way against the gun when decocked. It basically rests on what would be the first click of the colts four clicks in a real colt. So besides aesthetics, it also makes it so the hammer only really clicks 3 times when cocking instead of the iconic 4. And unfortunately for that I’ll have to take away a star since it seems like an issue that could easily have been fixed in manufacturing.
CHAMBERLIN –
This revolver looks amazing. It’s a great “fidget spinner”. Fun to hold and spin and aim unloaded.
But not all that fun to shoot. First of all it’s a real pain to empty the 6 round holders, reload the pellets then reload the rounds back into the gun.. for 6 shots which you’ll need to reload again in 5 seconds.
STANLEY –
It’s great! It has some good heft to it and is slightly lighter than the real thing.
Just be aware that these aren’t very powerful. So if you’re planning on using them to hit down some metal pellet targets, they either have to be really light or you have to be pretty close. I’d look at getting some of the Sig Air products for them.
MOTANA –
While there are many pellets out there, I recommend using the gold flight pellets from Crosman. They are more durable and have higher penetration. This revolver already has a high fps for a CO2 handgun and with a high penetrating pellet, this thing is a monster.
At 20 feet, I shot a 500 page old text book with the Gold Flight pellets and they penetrated a quarter of the textbook.
SOLANGE –
After 3 uses the gun broke and the manufacture will not return our calls to get it replaced.
Update: they finally emailed me but waited until the gun hit 2 days outside of the 90 day warranty to get me a shipping address so now I can pay to ship it both ways and get a quote for how much they will charge me to fix this gun.
